In the 1600s, a captain for the Dutch East Company reported that
Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) was so rich in cinnamon that eight
leagues out to sea, one could still smell the aroma of the trees.
The inner bark is used in cooking, flavorings,
aromatherapy and perfumes, and medicines. It is both pungent
and sweet. Cinnamon
is good for digestion: it relieves distension and bloating and
promotes proper metabolism of fats and sugars. It also
relieves congestion.
